Advocacy 101
Virtual Workshop

This event took place August 25, 2021 from 4-6pm
Hosted by Vicki Lopez

We can all lead if we just learn how.
Are you an advocate, an activist, or an elected official with an interest in advancing women and girls? Are you interested in becoming one?

Join us on Wednesday, August 25th for a hands-on working session with some of Miami’s top government affairs experts who will teach us how to activate our sphere of influence and improve our leadership skills, help us understand the differences between being an advocate, an activist, or an aspiring elected official, and how to get there.

Participants will learn:

  • What it means to advocate under The Women’s Fund umbrella and for their own organizations.
  • The definition of advocacy and its importance.
  • The difference between an activist and an advocate.
  • Skills and practical strategies for advocating and promoting issues that impact women and girls.
  • The difference between local, state and federal advocacy.
  • How to prepare for their advocacy efforts
  • Finding and contacting their legislators and local officials and setting the groundwork for the relationship.
  • Types of advocacy communications and the importance of a one-pager.
  • How to interact with elected officials and have an effective visit.
  • How to maintain a relationship and be a resource for the elected official and their staff.

Quoting our first female Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava’s three-part prescription for civic engagement:

  1. Get a daily dose of information
  2. Engage in an act of service weekly
  3. Be sure that you speak up monthly whether it be at a town hall, school board meeting, or other civic groups.

Our vision as the Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade County is that our community become the best place for women and girls to live, work, and thrive. Your voice is needed, and we hope you will join us.
