Our Pillar:

Heath and Well-Being

Help us ensure women’s health and well-being, regardless of race, background, or economic status.

The Status of Women In The States ranks Florida as #32 in the country in health and well-being. Women are at special risk of specific health conditions, such as depression and exposure to intimate partner violence, and typically incur greater health care costs than men. Low-income women and women of color are especially likely to experience poor health outcomes.

The Challenges

Affordable quality health care should be accessible to everyone in Miami-Dade County. This includes the right of women and girls in our community to make informed and unfettered health care choices, with access to the options they choose. From identifying and targeting gender-based health care inequities to advocating for affordable quality health care options and access to a healthy environment, we support programs, policies and educational initiatives that promote the health of women and girls in Miami-Dade County. We convene and collaborate with other agencies and organizations to create systemic change that addresses health care issues for women and girls.

Substance abuse has no place in Miami-Dade County. Addiction to alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription narcotics undermines the fiber of our community and negatively impacts the lives of women and girls. We support affordable medical treatment, rehabilitation facilities and programs for those suffering from addiction as well as their family members.

Quality mental health care should be available and affordable for all women and girls in Miami-Dade County, including services that help create emotional, psychological and social well-being. Good mental health makes it possible for a woman or girl to realize her own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work and/or participate in school productively and fruitfully, and contribute to her community.

Every woman and girl should be free to decide whether and when to have children without coercion or discrimination. Every woman and girl has the right to access the best reproductive information and health care available, and to exercise her choices with dignity. Unfettered access to birth control options and information concerning abortions is central to making informed decisions. Access to affordable, reputable reproductive clinics is essential.

Elder abuse, also known as senior abuse, needs to end in Miami-Dade County. Elder abuse is an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult (someone age 60 or older.) Forms of elder abuse include physical abuse, sexual abuse or violent sexual contact, and emotional or psychological abuse including isolation, neglect, and financial exploitation.

The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade supports suicide prevention efforts that address the unique mental health challenges facing women and girls. We invest in programs that expand access to care, reduce stigma, and strengthen community-based support systems.
