Americans for Immigrant Justice was founded in 1996 as Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, at a time when federal funding restrictions prevented most legal service providers from serving low-income immigrants unless they had already obtained legal status. With its specially-trained professional staff, AI Justice is a leader in our community in holistic representation of immigrant victims of human trafficking. Lucha: A Women’s Legal Project will use The Women’s Fund’s grant to provide legal services in helping 25 victims of sex or labor trafficking and their families break free from their abusers. For immigrant victims, the ability to secure legal status and obtain a work permit is the means to economic independence.
